Antiepileptic drugs: review of safety of use during pregnancy

The largest data set from the North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy Registry (Hernández-Díaz et al, 2014 and 2017) showed an increased risk of being small for gestational age and effects on birth weight and birth length. Patorno et al., 2017 conducted a cohort study nested in the US Medicaid Analytic eXtract (MAX) providing data on 477 pregnancies exposed to pregabalin in the first trimester and compared these to pregnancies of women not exposed to antiepileptics. The crude data suggested an increased risk of major congenital malformations (RR 1.80, 95% CI 1.26–2.58), which this was no longer statistically significant after the analyses were adjusted to take into account factors including age, race, comorbidities, and other medication. The larger clinical studies are those from the North American Antiepileptic Drug pregnancy registry (Hernandez-Diaz 2012, NAAED, 2019), the Swedish National Birth Registry (Kallen et al 2013) and a study using prospective data from teratology information services (Fujii et al 2013). None of these studies are suggestive of an increased risk of congenital malformations in association with use of gabapentin during pregnancy. However, the numbers exposed in each of these studies and the total overall numbers of exposed pregnancies (around 600 first trimester exposed pregnancies) remains relatively low and do not allow robust conclusions to be drawn.

It is estimated that more than 600,000 people in the UK have epilepsy and that every day 87 people in the UK are diagnosed with epilepsy. The estimated proportion of the UK population with active epilepsy (defined as having continuing seizures or a need for treatment) is around 1 in every 100 people in the UK. For around two-thirds of people with active epilepsy their epilepsy is adequately cerebrumiq controlled by treatment with one or more antiepileptic drugs.

In 2018 he was awarded the Lammy Lasting Impact award for his work in the NHS. In 2021 he received the Paul Satz Mentoring Award from the International Neuropsychological Society, given to those whose mentoring has had a profound effect on the careers of students in the field of neuropsychology nationally and internationally. He has been awarded numerous competitive research grants, and authored or co-authored over 300 scientific papers in neuropsychology, including in journals such as Nature, Neurology and Cortex, having an H Index (2021) of 91.

Mental Health ConditionsIt is not surprising that a condition like CVI that can affect social relationships, learning, behaviour and development, can lead to mental health conditions, and we know many people with CVI who have been affected by Depression. Understanding how impaired vision has caused difficulties can be very empowering, and a pathway to help and recovery can be developed, matching strategies to the known difficulties CVI creates. Complex Needs / Complex Additional Support NeedsComplex needs typically refers to a mix of medical needs and developmental difficulties. Sometimes this term is just used to mean developmental delays where there are many (and so, complex) causes. Without a list of the individual needs and difficulties, this term has extremely limited value.See Developmental Delay, below. Visual spatial skills are the ability to process visual stimuli to comprehend spatial relationships between objects and to visualize different scenarios or images.

  • This controls our emotions, sexuality, sleep and immune system, and plays an important role in long term memory.
  • Complex Needs / Complex Additional Support NeedsComplex needs typically refers to a mix of medical needs and developmental difficulties.
  • Samren conducted a very small study involving 33 phenytoin exposed pregnancies.
  • No clinical studies have examined the effect of exposure to zonisamide during pregnancy on the neurodevelopment of children.
  • Overall, the non-clinical data does not provide clear evidence that exposure to gabapentin during pregnancy adversely affects the development of the central nervous system.

The more that we all seek to develop these intelligences, the more that we will move away from a "blame" culture to one where we all accept responsibility for what happens through our interconnectedness with the outside world. Since the visual cortex in cats and humans is similar (they both contain ocular dominance columns), Hubel and Wiesel’s results can be applied to humans. This means that humans need to receive visual stimulation from both eyes during the early periods of life for their visual cortex to develop normally. For example, some babies are born with cataracts which make the lens of the eye go cloudy and obscures vision. Unless the cataracts are removed, the baby’s visual cortex will not develop properly because they are not receiving sufficient visual stimulation during early life. However, if adults develop cataracts it will not affect their visual system because it has already developed.

Sensory Processing DisorderPreviously called Sensory Integration Dysfunction, and relates to a wide range of difficulties linked to the senses. The range of difficulties is vast, as everything we experience is through the senses, so potentially anything that is difficult could be understood in terms of a sensory processing disorder. As is it not a diagnosable medical condition, there is no consensus as to the criteria, symptoms or definition. It can include difficulties with sounds, or the feel of anything, including the fabric of clothes in the skin.CVI causes visual processing difficulties, and from many reports, also auditory processing difficulties.
