Cooperations

pmdtechnologies GmbH, a fabless IC company, is the worldwide leading 3D Timeof-Flight CMOS-based digital imaging supplier. Started up in 2002 the company owns worldwide patents concerning pmd-based applications, the pmd (Photonic Mixer Device) principle and its realization. Figures to 2012 show that pmdtechnologies GmbH has already sold more than 500,000 pmd sensors.

In business since 2004, Bluetechnix is well known for high quality embedded system designs. Bluetechnix is specialized in Time-of-Flight smart sensors and cameras for industrial & consumer applications.Bluetechnix develops customer specific Time-of-Flight systems in a fast and efficient way by building on top of Bluetechnix’ own range of Time-of-Flight products and board-level cameras. A wide spectrum of services is offered ranging from requirement engineering, system specification, hard- and software development (including design-ins) and testing, up to the certification and mass production of the final solution including product lifecycle management and long-term support.

The main task of the Institute of Computer Science of the Ruhr-West University is research and teaching in the field of computer science. Applied computer science is understood as an interdisciplinary interface between computer science and other, particularly technical and scientific, fields. The focus is on the areas of vehicle information technology and cognitive systems. The overall objective in the field of cognitive systems engineering is the implementation of intelligent systems in homes and in industrial automation (e.g. for inspection tasks or quality assurance) which autonomously react to interaction partners and purposefully process environmental changes. The second research focus is the automobile-centered information technology. In addition to questions regarding the use of sensors and actuators in the vehicle and the vehicle information processing in general, research activities in the field of intelligent assistance systems constitute the basis for various projects in this area.

Neural computing is concerned with fundamental problems of information processing that are solved by organisms and their nervous systems. Artificial autonomous systems are confronted with these same problems. The goal of the Institute for Neural Computation at Ruhr-University Bochum is to understand the organizational principles through which nervous systems solve these problems and to form these principles into new solutions to problems of information processing in technical systems. This is done around the exemplary areas of artificial action (autonomous robotics), artificial perception (computer vision) and artificial cognition. Industrial applications are pursued in real time vision, face recognition, and medical engineering. The methods come primarily from the mathematical theory of neural networks, the theory of stochastic dynamical systems, and the theory of machine learning.
